Welcome to our new permanent pastor!

February 2017

We are  delighted that St. Matthew's has a permanent,  full-time pastor. Dr. Zakaria David Mandara was born December 7, 1966 in Old Moshi-Kilimanjaro, on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. He completed a Bachelor of Divinity and then a Masters of Theology at Tumaini University, Makumira College in 2003.

He was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1998 and worked as a parish pastor from 1998-2001. Dr. Mandara came to Canada in 2003 to further his theological studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoon and then moved to St Paul University, Ottawa where he studied conflict resolution. He pastored Redeemer Lutheran Church, Biggar, Saskatchewan in 2005, All Saints Lutheran Church in Ottawa from 2007 to 2013, then Almonte United Church for a year and served as interim pastor at St Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Cornwall until January 2017.

Commenting on his new appointment, Pastor Mandara said "I commit myself to making Christ the center of our lives, guiding the youth, visiting the sick, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ that will move our hearts closer to him and praying for any spiritual matters people might have in their lives."

November 8, 2016

We are delighted that Joan Nieman has agreed to take on the challenging job of church treasurer. She retired from a banking career several years ago little dreaming that she would be back working with finances again. We are indeed thankful to have her.

Call Committee works to find new pastor for St. Matthew’s

November 1, 2016

A Call Committee consisting of nine church members is hard at work going through the call process to find a new pastor for the church. Following the guidelines provided by CALC (Canadian Association of Lutheran Churches), they have completed a member survey to find out what the church is looking for in a pastor, created a church profile for those interested in applying and begun calling for applications. The Call committee will receive applications in November and review the submissions in December. We will keep you posted on new developments and while we wait, pray for God’s choice for a new pastor.

St. Matthew’s partner for CALC Conference 2016

October 21-23, 2016

What an exciting weekend we had at the 2016 CALC Annual Conference held in Ottawa at All Saints Lutheran Church. All Saints, St. Matthew’s, Cornwall and Resurrection Lutheran Church, Pembroke, teamed up to produce a dynamic event. The theme of the conference was Ambassadors for Christ and the keynote speaker Olaf Latzel from Bremen, Germany, gave riveting talks that had a profound impact on the attendees. Pastor Latzel and missionary presenters challenged all of us to stand up for Christ and share the gospel.

Thank you to all at St. Matthew’s who provided the food for Friday and hosted the meals. We also were responsible for the opening worship on Friday evening. A highlight of that service was the choral presentation by the 40-voice children’s choir from St. Timothy Classical Christian Academy. You can watch a video of that service by clicking
